Perseus does security scanning in Abu Dhabi
1 November 2007
Perseus, the Farnham based security consultancy, has undertaken its first security scanning in Abu Dhabi. Working in Partnership with DASCAM, one of Abu Dhabi’s premier risk and resilience consultancies, Perseus demonstrated its security scanning capabilities to the Abu Dhabi Police and Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. Perseus scanned a large area of the National Exhibition Centre using its state of the art laser scanner. This was followed by scanning the Zyed Stadium, the country’s national football stadium. At both sites the Police were highly impressed with the ability of the laser scanner to produce a data cloud with walk through and fly through facilities. The data cloud shows 3D actuality accurate to one centimetre over 800 metres. This can then be used with Perseus’ risk, resilience and mitigation software and methodology to “design out terror” and so make the sites considerably less vulnerable to terrorist and criminal attack.
Commenting on the visit, Gary Poole, Perseus’ Operation Director, said, “This was our first visit to Abu Dhabi and DASCAM identified exactly where the two of us could be of most use in making high profile sites less vulnerable to terrorist or criminal attack. The Police were impressed with the speed and accuracy with which we could do security scanning and the utility of the Perseus system appears to have won many admirers and potential customers. DASCAM have identified other potential projects for us and are delighted with the service. We do exactly what it says on the tin.”
Perseus is on the move
2 April 2007

The move will allow us to build on our success over the past year and provide us with the infrastructure and facilities with which to take the company and its services forward.”
Vehicle borne threats to a major US financial institution to be neutralised
21 November 2006
A major financial institution in the north eastern United States is to be protected from vehicle borne threats posed by criminals and terrorists. As part of its project to upgrade security at the facility, SecureUSA Inc is using a highly specialised threat assessment process to design a tailored solution to counter this very specific threat. This service is being provided by Perseus (GST) Ltd, the Guildford based security consultancy, and includes laser scanning, vehicle dynamics and CCTV matrix optimisation. This will be the first application of PIRAMS (Perseus Intelligent Risk Analysis Management System) in the United States. This unique methodology conducts an assessment of the threats facing a vulnerable site and then develops realistic and scientifically founded solutions to mitigate the risk.
The facility occupies a block of some 75,000 square metres and there is a need for all round perimeter protection. Perseus will be laser scanning to collect site specific geo spatial data and will then use PIRAMS to analyse the threat to facilitate the design of the most effective solution to countering any vehicle borne threat. In addition the 3D data cloud generated by the laser scanner will enable Perseus to accurately position CCTV cameras so there is maximum coverage and minimum dead ground with the optimum number of cameras.
Perseus will be supplying Secure USA with a copy of Cyclops, its own visualisation software, as well as training in the use of Cyclops. The data cloud and the results of the analysis will be given to Secure USA so ‘as built’ CAD drawings can be produced. Cyclops provides a flythrough and walkthrough facility so that the operator can look back from any point in the data cloud to any specific location.
Commenting on this ground breaking project, Russell Claybrook, SecureUSA’s Director of Sales, said, “When we first met Perseus, we recognised that there is nothing like this system to design security solutions which are applicable to our finance and transport clients. We invited Perseus to join us at our stand at the American Society of Industrial Security International exhibition in San Diego in September. At the exhibition the level of interest Perseus and PIRAMS generated was beyond our expectations and we look forward to developing this exciting relationship in providing an added value service to our clients.”
“Initially our prospective clients were in the North East USA.” said Gary Poole, Perseus’ Operations Director, adding, “They are still there, but now we are working with SecureUSA the number of potential users of our scanning system and PIRAMS has increased dramatically. SecureUSA’s assessment of the value of PIRAMS is an unexpected testimonial to the work done in developing the system.”
PIRAMS uses a 360 degree four point assessment method supported by software analysis techniques. With this Perseus can provide robust and rigorous understanding of the inherent risks confronting a location, site or a facility. The system has been designed to be holistic and to work in an inter–agency and multi–functional environment. It is particularly suited to complex facilities such as transport hubs where the effect of system performance, terrain and vulnerability have to be comprehensively assessed in order to produce an integrated, effective solution against terrorist and criminal threats.
Founded in 1995 and based in Cumming, Georgia, USA, Secure USA has grown to become the most knowledgeable consulting, engineering, and project management company in the North American perimeter security industry. It provides solutions, services, and products to government agencies, corporations, and public venues seeking to harden their perimeters and reduce the risk of a perimeter security breach.

Perseus announces newest release of its visualisation tool Cyclops
13 October 2006
Perseus, the Guildford based security consultancy, has developed the latest version of its visualisation tool – Cyclops. This innovative and comprehensive software tool has been developed to manipulate geospatial data generated by Perseus’ laser scanning and geo spatial surveys. Under normal circumstances the data generated by laser scanning is too complex and bulky for the end user to manipulate easily. Perseus is now able to deliver the resultant data in a format required by the end user and Cyclops offers functionality with which to manipulate the geospatial data to greatest effect. Cyclops allows Perseus’ clients to gain maximum use from their geospatial data.
Cyclops is a point cloud, 3D model and visualisation and animation package that offers a compact set of tools. When used with geospatial data it is powerful and cost effective. This latest version offers a number of functions in one easy to use unique package including:
- free hand manipulation of the data
- scaling and annotation
- camera and target viewpoints with toggle functionality
- free hand adjustable lighting direction
- instant screen snapshots
- simple show and hide function
- data cropping
- backdrop gradient shade between any two colours
- multiple view colour including full RGB
- multiple format import and export
- creation of flight paths and orbits
- creation of animations
Although Perseus is a security consultancy, the uses of the data generated by its laser scanning have generated considerable interest for numerous other applications. These include human factors in busy retail areas such a shopping malls, selling of season tickets in sports stadia where the client can see the actual view from the seat on a web site, building surveys, accurate measurement between any two points in the data cloud, the management of landfill sites, building restoration, etc. Recently the scanning and software has been used in the management of coastal defences, coastal erosion and the accurate replication of stonework inside churches and other historic buildings.

Perseus wins first contracts
28 June 2006
Perseus, the Guildford based security consultancy, has won its first three contracts. Two of them involve Perseus testing their clients’ requirements for various aspects of security and the third wishes to take advantage of Perseus’ highly accurate and rapid survey capabilities. Since becoming fully operational on 1 April 2006 Perseus has been dealing with an increasing number of companies and organisations which are interested in using Perseus’ integrated one stop shop to meet their often complex security problems. In addition Perseus now has framework agreements with two government agencies which means any security work that are within Perseus’ remit will be given to the company as and when there is a requirement.
Perseus is able to undertake rapid and highly accurate photo realistic surveys. One of the clients is required to conduct an accurate survey of a large area containing numerous residential properties. Following essential excavation and engineering work the area must be restored to its original condition. With its capability to survey to an accuracy of 10mm at a range of 800 metres, Perseus will produce a highly accurate survey illustrated with photo imagery so enabling the client to restore the boundary markers with maximum accuracy as well as any other features that may have been disrupted.
Commenting on the first orders Perseus’s Managing Director, said, “These orders are confirmation that the services we offer fill a gap in the market for sophisticated security solutions. Our one stop shop approach is attracting more and more serious interest at home and overseas. It is very satisfying to see that potential clients have identified non–security uses for our technology and this is widening our client base. One of our first contracts neatly illustrates this.”
